What is a Decorative Stomacher?
What is a decorative Stomacher? A stomacher is a decorated panel designed to be placed within the open front of a gown or corseted bodice. Historically, stomachers were widely used from the late 15th century through the end of the 18th century, forming both a functional and ornamental component of court dress.
In their earliest use, stomachers served a practical purpose: covering the opening at the front of a bodice to conceal the stays and chemise worn beneath the gown. These early examples were often made to match the garment itself, maintaining visual continuity across the bodice.
As fashion evolved, so did the stomacher. Contrasting colors, materials, and designs emerged, transforming the panel from a necessity into a focal point. By the height of its popularity, the stomacher had become a means of expression and distinction. Wealthy women commissioned panels adorned with intricate embroidery, metallic thread, pearls, and jewels, while others displayed their own needlework and artistic skill through personal designs.
For many households, the stomacher also offered an economical advantage. Replacing or commissioning a new panel allowed an existing gown to be refreshed and transformed without the expense of an entirely new garment—a practice that extended the life and versatility of a woman’s wardrobe.
By the 17th and 18th centuries, as bodices adopted a more conical silhouette, the stomacher followed suit, gradually assuming a triangular form. Decorative styles flourished during this period, with panels blooming in polychrome embroidery, faux lacing, applied bows, and layered ornamentation that echoed the richness of court fashion.
Historically, a stomacher served two essential functions. First, it extended the visual line of the corsetry, contributing to the structured silhouette of the gown. Second, it provided a decorative and customizable element, allowing a single garment to assume many expressions depending on the panel chosen.
Within the Immortelle tradition, our signature stomachers are designed to integrate seamlessly with our gowns and corsets. They may be laced directly into the front of compatible corseted bodices, or gently pressure-fit beneath ribbons or lacing atop the modesty panel. (Please note that stomachers are not designed for the Guinevere style due to its length.)
The stomacher remains, at its heart, an invitation to authorship. One gown may become many visions—ceremonial, romantic, restrained, or opulent—through the simple act of selection. Those who wish may even design their own panel, continuing a centuries-old tradition of personalization and creative expression.
